(Qur'an 16:71)

(Qur'an 1:6–7)

(Qur'an 4:69)

(Qur'an 2:253)

(Qur'an 31:15)

(Qaseedath Burda)

(Qur'an 42:52–53)

Wi-Fi and Hotspot: Understanding How Allah Provides His Providence- An Example

A free Wi-Fi network at an airport is available to everyone. Anyone can connect and receive the same access to the network. A hotspot, however, works differently. You connect through someone who already has a stronger network connection.

In many ways, Allah ﷻ has made the world operate more like a hotspot than a Wi-Fi system for the man.

When it comes to rizq (provision), Allah alone is the Provider. Yet, in His wisdom, He often chooses to distribute His provision through other people. In other words, Allah's system of provision generally works like a hotspot, not like Wi-Fi.

We do not expect bread and butter to fall directly from the sky as though provision were a free Wi-Fi network available equally to everyone. Rather, we seek them from those whom Allah has blessed with abundance, knowing that they are only the means, while Allah alone is the True Provider.

However, the very basic necessities of life—air, sunlight, and water—are like Wi-Fi. Allah has made them freely available to every living creature. Much of the rest of our provision, however, comes through the hotspot system, where one person becomes a means for another.

"And Allah has favored some of you over others in provision."

(Qur'an 16:71)

Who becomes these "hotspots," and how strong each one is, are all part of Allah's plan and His infinite wisdom.

"Provision is from Allah, while its distribution is according to His wisdom."

My purpose in using this example is to help us understand how the spiritual realm works. The same divine principle applies there as well.

There are spiritual hotspots.

Allah sends guidance through those whom He has chosen. We ask Allah in every ṣalāh:

"Guide us to the Straight Path—the path of those upon whom You have bestowed Your favor."

(Qur'an 1:6–7)

Who are those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor? They are the hotspots of hidāyah (guidance).

"The Prophets, the Truthful, the Martyrs, and the Righteous."

(From Qur'an 4:69)

If Allah had willed, He could have made guidance and revelation available to everyone like Wi-Fi, just as He made sunlight, air, and water available to everyone.

Instead, in His wisdom, He honored certain people, raised them in rank, and made them hotspots through whom guidance reaches others.

Even among the Prophets, Allah granted different ranks.

"Those Messengers—We have favored some of them over others."

(Qur'an 2:253)

If even the Prophets have different ranks, then it is only natural that those who inherit their guidance also differ in rank. Allah raises whom He wills and makes them means of guidance for others.

So the lesson is simple: know yourself and know your position. As servants ('ibād) of Allah, our path to Him is through those whom He has chosen as means of guidance. Remain humble enough to connect with those who are connected to Allah. They are not the source; they are only the means that Allah has chosen. The true Source of all guidance is Allah alone.

Just as you look for the correct hotspot to access the internet, you should seek the spiritual hotspots whom Allah has drawn close to Himself.

Hidāyah (guidance) is, in a sense, like yourself as a device connecting to the correct hotspot. Only a device that is already connected can share its connection with another. Likewise, only those who are truly connected to Allah, and whom He has blessed with this niʿmah, can become a means of guidance for others. Therefore, follow their path.

"And follow the path of those who turn to Me."

(Qur'an 31:15)

The greatest hotspot Allah has granted to creation since the beginning of creation is His Beloved Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ. Through him came revelation, mercy, guidance, and every blessing of faith for humanity. Every blessing of guidance reaches us through the message that Allah entrusted to him. He is the greatest mercy and the greatest gift for all the worlds—past, present, and future.

Even on the Day of Gathering, when all humanity stands before their Lord in fear and distress, Allah will honor His Beloved Messenger ﷺ with the Greatest Intercession (al-Shafāʿah al-Kubrā). This is the highest rank among all creation—the greatest hotspot for all mankind, including all the other Prophets (عليهم السلام).

"All of the Prophets seek from the Messenger of Allah, taking either a handful from the ocean or a sip from the droplets"

"All of them stand before him within the limits assigned to them, receiving only a drop of his knowledge or a point of his wisdom." (Qaseedath Burda)

The One who grants guidance is Allah. He alone is the ultimate Source. Yet, in His infinite wisdom, He has chosen means through which His mercy, provision, and guidance reach His servants. That is the beauty of His divine system—a system of hotspots, not Wi-Fi.

Understanding this principle also helps explain the traditional Ahl al-Sunnah understanding of tawassul (wasīlah) and other subjects that have become controversial in modern times, yet were accepted by the traditional scholars of Islam. Just as we seek our worldly provision through the means that Allah has created, we also seek spiritual benefit through the means that Allah has honored. Unlike a technological hotspot, a spiritual hotspot does not cease with physical death. A believer never believes that anyone besides Allah possesses independent power. The Prophets, the Truthful, the Martyrs, and the Righteous are not the source. They are honored servants whom Allah has chosen as means. The believer seeks only through the means that Allah has established while firmly believing that the true Provider, the true Guide, the One who benefits and harms, and the One who answers prayers is Allah alone.

The Wi-Fi and hotspot analogy is simply a way of understanding the divine system that Allah Himself has established. The Source is always Allah; the hotspots are those whom He has chosen. Recognizing and benefiting from those means is itself an acknowledgment of His wisdom and His decree.

Allah says:

"Indeed, you guide to a Straight Path—the Path of Allah, to Whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Truly, to Allah all matters ultimately return."

(Qur'an 42:52–53)

This concluding verse beautifully explains the entire analogy. The Messenger ﷺ guides to the Straight Path, yet that path is the Path of Allah. The hotspot is honored by Allah, and we should honor it as well, but the Source of every connection is always Allah. The means are honored, but the destination, the authority, and the ultimate Source remain Allah alone.

Allah knows best.
