(Uṣūl al-Fiqh)

⚖️ The Madhhab: A Measurement System for Understanding Islamic Rulings

⚖️ The Madhhab: A Measurement System for Understanding Islamic Rulings

Understanding Ikhtilāf, Imams and the Scholarly Tradition of Ahlus Sunnah

We have a system of measurement within the Ummah that has existed for centuries and through generations—a kind of standard or scale by which our Sharīʿah rulings and actions can be understood and evaluated.

📏 Let Us Take a Simple Example

To understand this, let us take a simple example from our daily life.

Most of us use the metric system as a system of measurement. For distance, we use metres; for weight, grams or kilograms; for volume, litres; and for temperature, Celsius.

These are recognised units of measurement, and everyone using that system understands what each unit represents.

🇺🇸 But it is not the same everywhere. In the United States, for example, the US customary system is commonly used. They use pounds and ounces for weight, feet and yards for distance, and Fahrenheit for temperature.

In the same way, we follow one of these systems—or, in our religious context, one of the Madhhabs.

So, if someone tells us that something is one metre, how do we know that it is actually one metre?

✅ Because there is a recognised standard behind that measurement.

We can compare the measurement against an established standard and determine whether it is correct.

☪️ What About Islamic Rulings?

In a similar way, within Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamāʿah, there has always been an established scholarly framework for dealing with matters in which there are differences of opinion—Ikhtilāf.

When scholars differ on a particular issue, the question is not simply:

“Can it be this way or that way?”

We also need to understand:

  • 🔹 What are the recognised opinions?
  • 🔹 What is the evidence behind them?
  • 🔹 How far can the difference of opinion extend?
  • 🔹 Where are the limits?
  • 🔹 What is within the recognised range of legitimate disagreement?

📚 This Is Where the Madhhabs Come In

A Madhhab is not simply a collection of different opinions saying, “You can do this or you can do that.”

Rather, it is a structured scholarly tradition that explains how the Qur'an and Sunnah are understood and applied, particularly in matters that require scholarly interpretation and Ijtihād.

📖 Uṣūl al-Fiqh

The Qur'an and Sunnah are the fundamental sources. The Madhhab provides a scholarly methodology for understanding and applying them. Along with this, it also incorporates recognised principles of Islamic jurisprudence, such as Ijmaʿ (scholarly consensus) and Qiyās (analogy).

Therefore, when we encounter an issue in which there is Ikhtilāf, the Madhhabs help us understand which opinions have been recognised within the scholarly tradition, the principles behind those opinions, and the limits within which legitimate differences can exist.

Just as different measurement systems have their own recognised units and methods, each Madhhab or school of thought has its own valid methodology, principles, and proofs behind its rulings.

👳‍♂️ The Role of the Imams and Ulama

And this is where the role of the Imams and Ulama becomes important.

The great Imams of Ahlus Sunnah were scholars who studied the Qur'an and Sunnah deeply and developed systematic methods for understanding and applying them.

Their knowledge was then transmitted through their students and through generations of scholars.

🔗 A Chain of Scholarship

↓
Generations of Ulama
↓
Us

A Madhhab is not simply the opinion of one scholar. It is an established scholarly methodology that was developed, tested, examined, documented, and further refined by generations of scholars throughout Islamic history.

Each school was preserved and transmitted through generations of Ulama. This is why a Madhhab represents a living scholarly tradition rather than merely the personal opinion of its founding Imam.

🧭 The Modern Situation

Now consider the modern situation.

Sometimes, we may come across people who quote the Qur'an and Sunnah directly but do not meaningfully refer to the established scholarship, the Imams, or any recognised Madhhab.

The concern is not that quoting the Qur'an and Sunnah is wrong. Of course, we all return to the Qur'an and Sunnah.

The important question is:

Through whose established scholarly method are the Qur'an and Sunnah being understood and applied?

If a person develops his own method of weighing evidence and determining rulings, he may effectively be creating his own scale of measurement.

Even if the intention is sincere, a person with limited knowledge may understand and weigh the evidence differently from the way it has been understood by generations of qualified scholars.

🔄 Do We Need to Start From Scratch?

If a reliable system of scholarship has been developed, preserved, examined, and transmitted through generations over many centuries, why should every generation start from scratch and derive an entirely new set of rules for itself?

⚙️
We Do Not Need to Reinvent the Wheel.

📐 The Scale Analogy

Just as we use established and recognised units of measurement rather than inventing our own metre, we can follow the established scholarly methodologies of the Madhhabs when understanding and applying Islamic rulings.

The point is not that a Madhhab replaces the Qur'an and Sunnah. Rather, the Madhhab represents a disciplined scholarly methodology through which the Qur'an and Sunnah are studied and applied.

This provides a framework that helps maintain continuity within the Ummah and keeps Islamic understanding connected to the recognised Imams and the scholarly tradition transmitted through them.

🌍 Think about a country or an area where everyone uses a common measurement system. It makes everyday life much easier. People can buy, sell, build, trade, and communicate measurements without everyone having to prove that their own personal scale is the correct one.

In the same way, an established scholarly methodology helps the common Muslim practise Islam without having to independently construct a new method of deriving every ruling.

🕌 Why Are They Called Imams?

And this also helps us understand the meaning of the word Imam.

In Arabic, Imām refers to someone who is taken as a guide or someone who is followed. That is why these great scholars are called our Imams.

We say Imam al-Shāfiʿī, Imam Abū Ḥanīfah, Imam Mālik, and Imam Aḥmad—not simply because they were famous scholars, but because their scholarship and methodologies were followed and transmitted through generations of the Ummah.

We commonly use the title Imam for scholars whose scholarly authority became recognised and whose knowledge was followed and transmitted by later generations of scholars. The title therefore signifies more than simply being a teacher or a respected individual.

🌿 An Imam is not merely someone whose name we know.

An Imam is a scholar whose knowledge and methodology have been followed, taught, transmitted, and preserved by generations of scholars.

⚖️ Returning to the Measurement

So, just as a measurement requires an established standard to determine whether something is actually one metre, religious understanding also benefits from an established scholarly framework through which we understand the Qur'an and Sunnah and recognise the proper boundaries of legitimate Ikhtilāf.

This is one of the important roles of the Madhhabs in the tradition of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamāʿah.

🤝 A Common Scholarly Framework

The Madhhabs provide a recognised framework for Muslims to learn, practise, and understand Islamic rulings while remaining connected to the scholarship of the Ummah.

For an ordinary Muslim who is not qualified for independent Ijtihād, following a recognised Madhhab provides a practical way to learn and practise Islam through an established school of scholarship.

🌍 One Ummah, Established Scholarship

We have four well-known Sunni schools of jurisprudence:

☪️ Ḥanafī
☪️ Mālikī
☪️ Shāfiʿī
☪️ Ḥanbalī

They have their own detailed methodologies and also contain differences within their legal reasoning. Yet they belong to the broader scholarly tradition of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamāʿah.

So, as an ordinary Muslim, we do not need to create our own scale every time we encounter a new question. We can learn through one of these established schools and rely on qualified Ulama to understand the Qur'an and Sunnah.

📏 When there is already an established scale, why create our own?

📚 When there is already an established scholarly tradition, why begin from scratch?

☪️ The Qur'an and Sunnah are our foundation. The Madhhab is a scholarly path through which they are understood and applied.

🌿 The Difference and Reality of Iṭāʿah (إطاعة) and Ittibāʿ (إتِّباع)

We regularly hear two important terms: Iṭāʿah (إطاعة) and Ittibāʿ (إتِّباع).

Although outwardly both may appear to mean obedience and following, there is a difference between them in meaning and usage.

Understanding this distinction helps us particularly to understand how our love and obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ should be expressed.

📜 1️⃣ Iṭāʿah (إطاعة) — Obedience

Iṭāʿah refers to acting according to the command or instruction of someone.

Obeying the commands of Allah and obeying the commands of the Messenger ﷺ are among the most important examples of Iṭāʿah.

“O you who believe! Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you.”

Surah An-Nisāʾ: 59

Allah also says:

“Whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah.”

Surah An-Nisāʾ: 80

🔹 A Simple Example

Following the laws of the country in which we live can help us understand the concept of Iṭāʿah.

Whether we are citizens or visitors, we are expected to obey the laws of that country, whether or not we personally like every rule.

🚦 For example, if the law says:

“STOP when the traffic light is RED.”

The important point is not whether we like the rule or not. We stop because it is a law.

A person may even obey a police officer because of the authority behind the law.

📜 Iṭāʿah (إطاعة)

Command → Obedience

Obedience does not necessarily require love, nor is obedience by itself proof of love.

🌿 2️⃣ Ittibāʿ (إتِّباع) — Following with Love

Ittibāʿ means following someone's path, way of life, example, and model.

❤️ Love has a significant place in genuine Ittibāʿ.

We normally try to know more about someone we love, learn their ways, and make them our example.

Think about someone who admires a famous actor or another person they greatly like. Because of that admiration, people may voluntarily imitate their clothing, speech, mannerisms, and lifestyle.

That person does not necessarily command them: “You must dress like me” or “You must behave like me.”

Rather, because of their love, admiration, and respect, they naturally want to follow them.

❤️ Love → Admiration → Following

This is a simple example of the idea of Ittibāʿ.

❤️ The Love for the Prophet ﷺ and Ittibāʿ

In the same way, when love (Maḥabbah – مَحَبَّة) for the Prophet ﷺ grows in our hearts, we naturally want to learn and follow his way of life, character, manners, and Sunnah.

“Say: If you truly love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you.”

Surah Āl ʿImrān: 31

❤️ Love   →   🌿 Following   →   🤲 Allah's Love

Notice here that Allah presents following the Messenger ﷺ as a manifestation of one's love for Allah.

📖 Another Important Verse

“Say: This is my way. I invite to Allah with clear insight — I and those who follow me.”

Surah Yūsuf: 108

Here, it is made clear that not only the Prophet ﷺ, but also those who follow him, are included in this path.

Therefore, Ittibāʿ means following the path of someone. In the case of the Prophet ﷺ, however, it is not merely outward imitation; its beautiful dimension is to follow his example with love and respect.

⚠️ What If Love Is Directed to the Wrong Person?

There is another important point that we should understand.

❤️ Love can motivate a person to follow someone.

Therefore, whom we love is extremely important.

The Qur'an itself uses the concept of Ittibāʿ (إتِّباع) in relation to following Shayṭān.

Love for righteous people can encourage us to follow their good ways.

However, love for the wrong people or attachment to wrong ways can cause us to follow and imitate their incorrect path.

“And do not follow the footsteps of Shayṭān.”

Surah Al-Baqarah: 168

In other words, whom we love influences whom and what we follow.

As our love for someone increases, our tendency to follow their ways may also increase.

❤️ Love → 🌿 Following → 🛤️ Direction of Life

Therefore, a Muslim should direct his Maḥabbah (مَحَبَّة) toward the right people and the right path.

⭐ Iṭāʿah and Ittibāʿ in the Same Verse

A beautiful example that helps us understand the relationship between these two concepts can be seen in Surah Ṭā-Hā 20:90.

“So follow me and obey my command.”

Surah Ṭā-Hā: 90

Here we can clearly see both concepts:

“Follow me” → Ittibāʿ (إتِّباع)

“Obey my command” → Iṭāʿah (إطاعة)

Iṭāʿah and Ittibāʿ are not contradictory concepts.

Each has its own particular meaning and place.

🌿 In Summary

📜 Iṭāʿah (إطاعة)
Obeying someone's command or instruction.
🌿 Ittibāʿ (إتِّباع)
Following someone's path, example, and way of life.
❤️ Maḥabbah (مَحَبَّة)
Love that moves the heart toward following someone.

❤️ The Connection

As our Maḥabbah (مَحَبَّة) for the Prophet ﷺ increases, our desire to follow his Sunnah, character, and way of life should also increase.

❤️ Maḥabbah

📜 Iṭāʿah

Love, following, and obedience are deeply interconnected in the life of a believer.

🌹 The True Proof of Love

Love is not something that remains only in words;
it should become visible through obedience and following.

“You disobey Allah while claiming to love Him — this is something impossible according to sound reasoning.”

“If your love were genuine, you would obey Him. For the one who truly loves someone is obedient to the one he loves.”

“Every day, Allah showers you with His blessings, while you fall short in giving thanks for those blessings.”

❤️ Love Must Be Seen in Life

Therefore, true love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ is not something expressed merely through words.

That love should become visible in our lives — through obedience, following, and living according to the Sunnah.

Whom we love, whom we take as our example, and whose path we follow — all of these influence the direction of our lives.

Love should not remain only in the heart;
it should be demonstrated through our lives. ❤️

A reflection by Ismail Eliat

സ്നേഹം വാക്കുകളിൽ മാത്രം ഒതുങ്ങുന്നതല്ല;

അതുകൊണ്ട് സ്നേഹം ഹൃദയത്തിൽ മാത്രം ഉണ്ടാകരുത്;

🌙 Mawlid Nabi ﷺ —🍱 The “Packed Food” Principle: Examine the Ingredients

🌙 Mawlid Nabi ﷺ — Examine the Ingredients

There is a simple way to understand the discussion about Mawlid al-Nabi ﷺ: Mawlid is not one single act. It is a gathering made up of a number of different activities.

So instead of asking only:

❌ “Is Mawlid Halal or Haram?”
❌ “Is Mawlid Sunnah or Bidʿah?”

we can ask the more useful question:

🔍 What exactly is inside a Mawlid gathering?

Just as we do not judge a packet of food merely by looking at its outside cover, but instead examine its ingredients, a Mawlid gathering should likewise be examined ingredient by ingredient.

🍱 The “Packed Food” Principle

Imagine a packet containing ten different ingredients. One ingredient may be nutritious, another ordinary, and another unsuitable. We would not intelligently say:

“The entire packet is one ingredient.”

We read the label and examine each ingredient.

Likewise, a traditional Mawlid gathering may contain:

📖 Qur'an 🌹 Salawat 📿 Dhikr ❤️ Love 📚 Sirah 🌹 Madh 🤲 Duʿā 🍚 Feeding 💰 Charity 🎓 Teaching 🤝 Brotherhood 📜 Poetry

Each of these deserves to be examined according to its own Islamic basis, wording, intention and manner of performance.

📜 12 Rabīʿ al-Awwal — The Famous Historical Date

The exact date of the Prophet's ﷺ birth is a matter on which early historical reports differ. However, the famous date of 12 Rabīʿ al-Awwal is attributed to the early Sīrah authority Muhammad ibn Isḥāq.

“Allah's Messenger ﷺ was born on Monday, twelve nights having passed of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, in the Year of the Elephant.”

Thus, 12 Rabīʿ al-Awwal is an early historical position attributed to Ibn Isḥāq, and it became the most widely recognized date in many traditional Muslim communities.

📚 What Did Major Sunni Scholars Say?

The discussion of Mawlid is not something that appeared only in modern times. A number of major Sunni scholars across the centuries discussed the practice and specifically emphasized an important principle:

Examine what is actually being done in the gathering.

⭐ 1. Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

Famous Muḥaddith • Author of Fatḥ al-Bārī • d. 852 AH

When asked about Mawlid, Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī emphasized that it contains both good and objectionable elements. He then explained that the good elements should be retained and the objectionable elements avoided.

His practical emphasis:
Qur'an recitation, feeding people, charity and praise of the Prophet ﷺ — while avoiding objectionable elements.

⭐ 2. Abū Shāmah al-Maqdisī

Great Shāfiʿī scholar • Teacher of Imām al-Nawawī • d. 665 AH

Abū Shāmah praised the good practices associated with annual remembrance of the Prophet's ﷺ birth, mentioning charity, good deeds, beautification, joy and expressions of love and reverence.

Key idea: the contents express love, joy and reverence for the Messenger ﷺ.

⭐ 3. Imām Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī

Great Shāfiʿī scholar and prolific Muḥaddith • d. 911 AH

Al-Suyūṭī wrote an entire treatise, Ḥusn al-Maqṣid fī ʿAmal al-Mawlid, specifically discussing Mawlid. He described a gathering consisting of Qur'an recitation, accounts of the Prophet's ﷺ birth and feeding the people as a praiseworthy form of gathering.

His Mawlid ingredients:
📖 Qur'an + 📚 Sirah + 🍚 Food + ❤️ Joy at the birth of the Prophet ﷺ

⭐ 4. Imām Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī

Major Shāfiʿī jurist and scholar • d. 974 AH

Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī examined Mawlid gatherings according to their actual contents. He specifically identified charity, Dhikr, Salawat and praise of the Messenger ﷺ among the good deeds found in such gatherings, while warning that objectionable elements must not be included.

This is exactly the “ingredient-by-ingredient” approach.

⭐ 5. Imām al-Sakhāwī

Great Muḥaddith • Student of Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī • d. 902 AH

Al-Sakhāwī discussed the historical practice of Mawlid and its virtue, and he himself authored a work concerning the Prophet's ﷺ birth.

His place in the discussion: A major Hadith scholar from the generation immediately following Ibn Ḥajar.

⭐ 6. Imām al-Qasṭallānī

Famous commentator on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī • d. 923 AH

In his al-Mawāhib al-Ladunniyyah, al-Qasṭallānī spoke positively of those who commemorate the birth of the Prophet ﷺ and prayed for Allah's mercy upon those who rejoice in it.

⭐ 7. Ibn al-Jazarī

Great Qur'an and Hadith scholar • d. 833 AH

Ibn al-Jazarī spoke positively of commemorating the Prophet's ﷺ birth and regarded it as a means connected with expressing joy and reverence for the Messenger ﷺ.

⭐ 8. Shāh Walīullāh al-Dihlawī

Major Indian Ḥanafī scholar • d. 1176 AH

Shāh Walīullāh described witnessing a Mawlid gathering in Makkah during his stay there. He records people sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and recounting the miraculous events connected with his birth. He described witnessing lights associated with the gathering.

Historical significance:
His account demonstrates that Mawlid gatherings were established and practiced in the sacred city of Makkah during his lifetime.

Note: His account is evidence of his experience and participation/observation; it should not be turned into a stronger legal quotation than the text itself establishes.

⭐ 9. Mullā ʿAlī al-Qārī

Major Ḥanafī scholar and commentator of Hadith • d. 1014 AH

ʿAlī al-Qārī wrote an entire work entitled al-Mawrid al-Rawī fī Mawlid al-Nabawī. In discussing the subject, he transmitted and commented upon the approach of Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī, emphasizing Qur'an, feeding people, charity and praise of the Prophet ﷺ.

⭐ 10. Ibn ʿĀbidīn al-Shāmī

Major Ḥanafī jurist • author of Radd al-Muḥtār • d. 1252 AH

Ibn ʿĀbidīn is also among the later major Ḥanafī authorities associated with the discussion and acceptance of Mawlid gatherings when their contents remain within proper Islamic limits.

⚖️ The Important Distinction

These scholars do not give us a licence to put anything we want into a Mawlid gathering.

Their writings actually reinforce the opposite principle:

Examine the contents.
Keep what is sound.
Remove what is objectionable.

Thus, a gathering containing Qur'an, Salawat, Dhikr, Sirah, praise of the Prophet ﷺ, charity, feeding people and reminders toward good deeds should be examined on the basis of those individual ingredients.

🍱 The Mawlid Ingredient List

🍱 Ingredient 📖 What is it? 🔍 What should be examined? 🌹 Purpose in Mawlid
📖 Qur'an Recitation and reflection Correct recitation and meaning Guidance and blessing
🌹 Salawat Blessings and peace upon the Prophet ﷺ Sound wording Love and honour
📿 Dhikr Remembrance of Allah Proper forms and manners Remembering Allah
📚 Sirah Life and mission of the Prophet ﷺ Authenticity of reports Knowledge and love
🌹 Madh Praise of the Prophet ﷺ Truthful praise without theological excess Love and reverence
📜 Poetry / Nasheed Islamic poetry and praise Words, meaning and manner Expression of love
🎓 Teaching Islamic reminders Correct knowledge Education
🍚 Feeding Serving food Source, extravagance and waste Generosity and fellowship
💰 Charity Sadaqah and helping others Intention and proper recipients Thankfulness and service
🤲 Duʿā Supplication to Allah That worship is directed to Allah alone Seeking Allah's mercy
⚠️ Excess / Wrong Elements Anything independently objectionable Must be identified and removed Not justified merely by being part of Mawlid

🌹 The Principle

Do not judge the packet before examining its ingredients.

Mawlid is a collection of activities.
Each activity has its own Islamic basis and its own conditions.

Qur'an → Salawat → Dhikr → Sirah → Madh → Poetry → Duʿā → Charity → Feeding → Teaching → Love → Following the Sunnah

Examine every ingredient. Keep what is sound. Remove what is objectionable.

🌙 That is the balanced traditional Sunni approach to Mawlid.
